PC World: How Etsy.com Grows in a Unique Fashion

Over on the PC World site, there's a new article posted about Etsy and its development practices and how it "grows in a unique fashion" because of them.

The Etsy staffers are also completely serious about their work, and these two features they share in common with their customer base, who are tying to earn side money, if not pay the rent, by designing the hand bags, walking sticks and hand-made chocolates that have made Etsy famous in the artisan and sustainable business scene. [...] The quality model for Etsy is cutting edge, but not unique. New developers are expected to push code to production on day one. That's not commit code, but push it to production.

The article gets into some of the technology they use there at Etsy (including NodeJS, Nagios and, of course, PHP), the atmosphere they try to maintain, how they do their code deployment and how they conform to various regulations, security and privacy concerns.

Stefan Koopmanschap's Blog: Using git-svn with Symfony2's deps installer

In this latest post to his blog Stefan Koopmanschap shares a quick tip about using the git-svn tool with the dependency installer in a Symfony2-based application.

I work a lot with Symfony2's deps file for installing 3rd party bundles into my project (yeah I know, I should be using Composer, right?). This works really well when working with pure Git. However, when you're not using Git on it's own but instead use git-svn, you may run into some issues when issuing git svn dcommit,

One issue relates to a "Failed to read object" error that could come up during the push. His solution involves a few steps (manual ones) to prepare those bundle directories and make it easier to push the rest of your changes. He also includes a few links to other resources that he found around the same topic.

Latest PEAR Releases:

PHPMaster.com: Continuous Integration (with Jenkins), Part 2

Following up from his previous post about setting up PHP with Jenkins, J Armando Jeronymo is back with part two of the series - setting up an example project to show how the pieces fit together.

In the first part of this article I presented the case for Continuous Integration. Now we'll install and set Jenkins up to monitor the automatic building of a simple demonstration PHP application. We'll begin with the demo project, then address Jenkins' installation, and finally set it up and watch it running.

He includes a sample project structure, complete with a PHP class and its tests. He shows how to manually run things first (so you'll know what the commands do), the contents of the class/tests and the example Ant configuration file. He's also included screenshots of the Jenkins interface, showing how to create a build, add a new step and let the build run to evaluate the results.

Design Aeon: Cake PHP Search Component

On the Design Aeon blog there's a new post sharing a CakePHP component that can be used to easily add searching to your framework-based application.

Cake Php Search Component is used to implement search in your cake php projects. The component provide highly reusability. component is meant to use across all the controllers. you just include this search component in your Controller and call a component function to fetch your conditions types in search form and refine the data .

The component (available for download here) is simple to install and full instructions for implementing it are included in the post - including it in the controller, creating search and pagination elements, making a controller action and finally making a view to tie it all together.
